Sheffield Academy in The Morning Journal!

Families Visting Sheffield Academy

Big thanks to Spencer Mahon from The Morning Journal who covered Sheffield Academy’s plans to open as a new public charter school with a sports emphasis.

It’s that time of the year again.

And it’s no different for a new school in Sheffield Village.

Sheffield Academy, 2180 Lake Breeze Road, hosted a Back to School Bash on Aug. 9.

Officials at the academy said they are excited because they get to open their doors for the first time for classes Aug. 17.

The Back to School Bash was a chance for Sheffield Academy to celebrate and introduce the campus to the community.

This was the first time that the Sheffield/Sheffield Lake community as well as families from neighboring communities could see what the school looked like on the inside and learn more about the academy.

“This is my second time opening a school from the ground up,” said Gary Lane, principal of Sheffield Academy. “This will be his first time opening a school with high emphasis on athletics.”

Lane is an experienced veteran with ACCEL Schools, and most recently he was an interim principal in the Tiffin area with Bridges Prep.

The Back to School Bash offered free food and games as well as staff giving tours of the school.

Enrolled students also could have picked up free school supplies if they needed them.

Lane said he believes parents should have a choice in where their children go to school.

Sheffield Academy is a school that looks to balance academics and athletics for early kindergarten through the fifth-grade, he said.

“The focus will be the younger kids going with sports first and older kids will go last,” Lane said about how the athletic structure is going to attract students.

The main areas of academic expertise are English, math, social studies and science which will be handled in the mornings leaving the afternoon for specials and extracurricular activities which include sports, art and music.

The school day is designed to have both academics and athletics done by about 3:15 p.m. in order to give families the chance to have the evenings for homework and dinner together, Lane said.

Sheffield Academy is a public, community school school district sponsored by the Ohio Council of Community Schools (OCCS), which provides oversight and enforces academic, fiscal and legal accountability, according to its website.

It is managed by ACCEL Schools, a high-performing network of over 50 charter schools located throughout the United States, the website says.
